The changing role of ‘medical engineer’

The recent Welch Allyn educational symposium provided an insight into the changing demands placed on those tasked with delivering effective medical device management. LOUISE FRAMPTON reports.

Biomedical engineering and clinical procurement specialists recently gathered at the annual Completing the Picture symposium, at the Heritage Motor Museum, Warwickshire, to discuss a wide range of topical issues aimed at improving patient safety, healthcare efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Chaired by Steve Webb, EBME Manager at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, the event opened with an insight into ‘improving patient experience through technology’ by Dr Alex Zarneh, head of medical physics/radiation protection services, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. In his presentation, Alex Zarneh highlighted a need for the perception and remit of the profession of biomedical engineering to change, in order to offer a sustainable service which is highly visible, focused on the patient, and capable of delivering solutions to key issues identified by users of medical devices.
