SATS: keeping the power supply stable

During surgery, or at any point when a patient is connected to life-saving medical electrical equipment, it is important that the power supply is as reliable as possible, despite possible fluctuations or disruptions in the electrical supply network.

SATS, the new automatic transfer switch from STARKSTROM, can build more resilience into medical electrical power supply systems. It offers a further enhancement to Isolated Power Supplies (IPS). If the sockets lose power, the SATS automatically transfers supplies. The changeover happens at IPS level, ensuring the break in supply will be negligible, and the procedure can carry on without the team having to take any action. The addition of SATS allows both IPS and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to work at the optimum level, building an extra level of resilience into the system. If SATS detects a change in voltage or frequency outside a user-defined limit (typically 10% for voltage), it will switch to a back-up supply within 0.5 seconds. The device will choose between the two supplies feeding into the IPS, picking which to take power from. In the case of a power failure, a UPS will switch to battery. SATS is available in two changeover solutions – Standard and Advanced.
