Guarding reputations and improving care

Protecting staff from false allegations, making significant savings in medical device provision, and optimising the use of paediatric telemedicine were among subjects examined at Completing the Picture – Looking to the Future, a recently held symposium sponsored by an education grant from Welch Allyn. NICHOLAS MARSHALL reports.

An answer, Dr Park considered, was to widely introduce closed-circuit television cameras so that everything that occurred in a particular area was recorded.

If events were recorded, staff could be protected and patients could be reassured when situations worrying them were reviewed and explained. Patients could benefit from being able to view video footage which showed why a delusion had arisen.

If an adverse event involving a member of staff occurred in an intensive care unit, then the unit team stopped functioning, Dr Park said.
