Varicose vein treatment initiative

Acompany which provides state-of-the-art treatment for those who suffer pain from the effects of varicose veins plans to speed up care offered to patients on the NHS and dramatically reduce waiting lists.

Recently formed Rostra UK offers minimally invasive laser techniques where short pulses of laser energy are delivered to seal the faulty vein. This simple procedure is an alternative to surgically stripping the veins, and only requires a recovery time of 36 hours.

The firm, located in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, predicts that for every patient referred to it from the NHS, another patient can be moved along, therefore moving double the number of patients from the waiting lists.

Working closely in partnership with the NHS, Rostra UK is able to provide care for patients referred for the treatment of varicose veins using procedures recommended by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence. The opportunity to develop the company was the vision of Rostra UK’s managing director Ian Brown, who originally trained as a registered nurse and was previously national business manager in vascular systems at medical products manufacturer B.Braun.

Ian Brown said: “At any one time there are approximately 10,000,000 varicose vein sufferers in the UK. On receiving a GP referral letter, Rostra UK can treat 70% of patients suitable for treatment within four weeks. Patients will be offered their initial outpatient appointment, diagnosis, treatment and discharge all in one day. “Rostra UK has been formed at a time of significant change within the NHS.

The background of myself and the management team is from the health sector, so we have an intimate understanding of the issues it faces and how we can provide solutions to the future needs of the NHS. We are in discussions with a large number of Trusts up and down the UK, all of whom recognise that contracting services to the private sector will be very much on the agenda in the months ahead.

“Our aim is to provide a highly flexible and responsive service and we have the resources and capabilities to do just that. Our number one concern is, of course, the overall care and health improvement of patients.”

The laser surgery and other treatments are offered either at fixed sites within an NHS Trust or in purpose-built mobile treatment units, the latter making treatment more easily accessible to patients, by professionally qualified practitioners and consultant vascular specialists.

Working alongside Ian Brown are Melanie Moore, operations director and Liam Huson, sales and marketing director. A major coup for the firm was the appointment of one of the leading national vascular clinicians to the post of clinical director. Professor Nick Cheshire will be responsible for Rostra’s clinical protocols and policies and will oversee the clinical governance programmes.
