Conference to spotlight four major diseases

The First HPA Pointers (Prevention of Occupational Infections, Treatment and Exposure Reporting Strategies) Conference on 16 and 17 November in London is being promoted as an exciting event for everyone involved in occupational health, infection control, public health, health protection, risk assessment and the management of infected healthcare workers.

The Health Protection Agency conference is built around the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of four major diseases, Hepatitis B and C, HIV and Tuberculosis, as they apply in the healthcare setting.

Infections of healthcare workers from patients are worrying and there has to be particular vigilance. The speakers at this conference are some of the foremost experts in this area of clinical practice.

Sustaining a needlestick injury is a very stressful experience. An individual who discovers that he or she has been infected faces a lifechanging nightmare. Recently there have been more cases of Hepatitis C seroconversions following needlestick injuries.

Professor Geoff Dusheiko will explore the benefits of early reporting and comprehensive follow up, as he discusses the accumulating evidence for the acute treatment of Hepatitis C. Dr Marko Petrovic will speak on some of the new and innovative methods in the diagnosis of TB. Lessons can be learned from other countries and benefits gained from their experiences.

The keynote speakers, Dr Gabriella de Carli from Italy and Professor MaryRoss from South Africa, will present on bloodborne virus epidemiology and the interaction of HIV and TB in the healthcare setting, giving perspectives from their respective countries.
