Ateam of surgeons at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, recently performed the UK’s first successful beating heart transplant. Used for the operation was advanced technology which enabled the heart for transplant to be kept warmand beating outside the body prior to transplant. With the technology, from TransMedics, the heart is perfused with warm, oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood and maintained at the appropriate temperature.
