Medovate - Giving Anaesthetists Control, Improving Patient Safety

Medovate is a dynamic new medical device company developing innovation created within the National Health Service (NHS). Based in Cambridge in the UK, Medovate develops and manufactures revolutionary new medical technologies for Regional Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Airway Management.

At Medica 2019, Medovate will formally launch two innovative new medical devices for Regional Anaesthesia and Airway Management. Medovate will be exhibiting on Stand Number 16M17-4 as part of the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) Pavilion in Hall 16.

SAFIRA (Safer Injection for Regional Anaesthesia) is a ground-breaking solution to help prevent patient nerve damage during nerve block procedures. SAFIRA facilitates a single operator procedure by allowing a single operator, an anaesthetist, to conduct the whole regional block at safe pressures.

Current regional anaesthesia procedures require two operators: an anaesthetist who holds an ultrasound scanner and uses this to guide the needle tip placement and a second operator to inject the anaesthetic solution at a required pressure. It has been reported that anaesthetic solutions are often injected at high pressure. High pressure can cause damage to nerve fascicles, with serious nerve damage occurring in up to 1% of procedures and transient nerve damage in up to 8% of cases.

SAFIRA incorporates an engineered safety solution to help control the injection pressure threshold, and allows the anaesthetist to control the entire procedure, improving patient safety.

Humidicare is a novel safety Heat and Moisture Exchanger (HME) to help prevent critical airway obstruction. This smart new HME visually alerts staff if it has been connected to a humidified breathing circuit in error, potentially saving patients lives.

The inadvertent use of HME with a heated humidifier in breathing circuits can result in risks of critical airway obstruction for patients with fatal consequences. Humidicare incorporates a unique safety engineered solution within an HME to provide a consistent and predictable solution to help prevent such medical ‘never events’.

Visitors to Medica 2019 will be able to see demonstrations of both these innovative new technologies, developed with clinicians working in the UK National Health Service (NHS) for themselves and talk to members of the Medovate team.  The company will be actively seeking commercial partners at Medica 2019 to bring these new technologies to market across the United States and the EU, making them available to medical professionals to help improve patient outcomes.

Medovate is ISO 13485:2016 certified. All devices in its growing portfolio are manufactured in compliance with the most stringent quality and regulatory standards.
