Introducing Stryker ‘Prime by the Numbers’

Download PDF version of article

The demands on healthcare professionals have never been greater—heavier patients, longer transports, demanding patients, and an expectation to perform with fewer hands on deck. You are forced to do more with less. Stryker has the Prime Solution to help address these needs.

Stryker Prime is designed to ensure your safety and efficiency while enhancing the patient experience. Designed to be ‘BackSmart’, this patient transport solution can be instrumental in reducing caregiver injuries during patient care. Prime offers three mobility options and unprecedented patient comfort. Patients can adjust their own positions without calling a caregiver for assistance. A variety of available support surfaces and configuration options ensure optimum versatility.

Over the years, the company has developed numerous case studies highlighting the benefits of efficiency, staff safety, patient satisfaction and patient comfort associated with the Prime stretchers:

Efficiencies and savings

Stryker Prime offers three advanced mobility options – the Zoom Motorised Drive System that virtually eliminates manual push force; the Big Wheel that reduces push force by 50% and steering effort by 60%; and the retractable Fifth Wheel that helps make cornering easier. When the patient population doubled over a period of three years, at the Centre Hospitalier de Denain, in France, the organisation looked for a solution capable of meeting their demands. The Centre Hospitalier de Denain was able to realise multiple benefits from utilising the Prime Zoom: the hospital’s day surgery area was able to accommodate the stretchers, while also achieving savings of €120,000/year.

Staff safety

Users can benefit from the electric option on the Stryker Prime Stretcher – with powered lift, knee gatch and backrest. Even when electric controls are not used, the Stryker BackSmart design makes manual adjustments easy for a seamless transition between electric and manual modes. With patient controls on the side-rails, patients can have more control of their own comfort — and less need to call for assistance and repositioning.

All electric controls have patient lockouts and manual backup, including the exclusive BackSmart Lift Assist. With the increased comfort of Prime, patients feel less urgent need to transfer to beds, giving you more control of your time. Stryker’s Prime Series Stretcher with Big Wheel and electric lift reduces exertion when lifting the stretcher litter. To pump a stretcher with manual lift from its lowest height to its highest height with a 500-pound patient takes over 2,000 pounds of force as compared to 50 pounds of force when using a stretcher with an electric lift.

A study conducted at Western Michigan University found that Stryker Prime Series Electric Stretcher reduced the risk of a lower back disorder (LBD) to 1% when repositioning a patient.

Patient satisfaction

Stryker Prime is designed to ensure caregiver safety and efficiency, while enhancing the patient experience. Stryker Prime Stretchers can be put in a recovery chair position which helps eliminate the need for unnecessary transfers by providing a comfortable position for patients to recover. In a survey conducted after the installation of the Prime Zoom Stretcher, Centre Hospitalier de Denain reported a 95% patient satisfaction rate.

Patient comfort

Whether it is extended lengths of stay or addressing patient comfort, the open architecture of Stryker Prime allows you to choose the support surface that meets your facility’s needs. This advantage affords you the flexibility to provide customized care tailored to the individual needs of your patient population. When equipped with the Pioneer stretcher surface that redistributes pressure through advanced technology, pressure on a patient’s skin was reduced by 55% when compared to a conventional three-inch vinyl mattress.

Advanced mobility

Daily pushing, pulling and steering stretchers with conventional casters can take a toll on your back. Baylor conducted a comparative study between two similarly-configured Stryker stretchers — the SM104 with a fifth wheel and the SM204 with a Big Wheel. Stryker’s Big Wheel reduced start-up effort by 45% with trailing casters and 58% with perpendicular casters on carpet when compared to a fifth wheel model.

Stryker Prime TC by the Numbers redefining patient transport

For over 70 years, Stryker has been a partner in patient transport for hospitals and health systems around the world. After a sudden illness left him paralysed from the chest down, world-renowned architect and designer Michael Graves sought out the medical division of Stryker to form a strategic partnership. The goal of this partnership was to improve the healing environment for both patients and caregivers.

In addition to intense collaborative research between Stryker and the Michael Graves Design Group, Michael offered his firsthand perspective on the functionality and aesthetics lacking in the standard wheelchair – a chair that has only seen about a halfdozen major improvements since 1933. Through this collaboration, patient perspective has been married with innovation and design in the Prime TC Transport Chair.

Together, Stryker and the Michael Graves Design Group are improving the patient journey through this simple, safe and reliable solution to seated patient transport and, by doing so, are elevating the perception of organisations’ quality and standard of care. In addition to patient and caregiver safety, the patient experience is critical to the success of your organisation. Prime TC is designed to help reduce the risk of adverse events like patient falls and infection, while enhancing the patient experience, all in an effort to maximise your reimbursements. Prime TC continues Stryker’s legacy of quality and innovation, which is backed by an unprecedented three-year warranty.

Since Prime TC’s launch in 2013, two European case studies were published that highlight the transport chair’s ease of use, staff satisfaction and cleanability.

Ease of use

BackSmart Push Handles allow caregivers to position their elbows at an ergonomic 90-degree angle during transport and accommodate caregivers of virtually any height. Yellow Activation Points intuitively indicate which components are actionable for caregivers and family members. In a study of Prime TC conducted at Dorset County Hospital, 100% of the surveyed users agreed that Prime TC is easy to push and 99% agreed that Prime TC is easy to manoeuvre in a confined space.

Staff satisfaction

When it comes to the patient experience, details matter. That is why every touch-point of the Prime TC transport Chair is designed to create a comfortable, welcoming and safe environment that speaks volumes to caregivers, patients and their family members. Prime TC has undergone rigorous life cycle testing to ensure that it will stand the test of time. This investment in the wellbeing of patients and caregivers tells them you care about their comfort and safety – it tells them that they matter.

The Dorset County Hospital study also showed that 97% of those surveyed agreed that Prime TC is an efficient transport chair while 96% agreed that they were very satisfied with Prime TC.

Cleanability

Moulded plastic, seamless design and powder-coated steel eliminate fabric rips and reduce the risk of rust that can be difficult to clean and often harbours infectious bacteria. A simple, powerwashable frame makes cleaning quick and easy. When put through 25 wash cycles, the Prime TC Transport Chair proved to be easier and more effectively cleaned than a traditional wheelchair typically found in a hospital setting.
