Innovative surgical solutions

KARL STORZ is committed to supporting hospitals in providing the most advanced clinical environment for surgery and ensuring the best outcome for patients.

In line with healthcare providers’ challenges and aspirations, the company also offers tailored commercial solutions and partnership programmes, designed to complement its technological solutions. OR1™, IMAGE1 SPIES™ and VISITOR1® are just three of these technological solutions, used in hospitals throughout the UK.

OR1 integrated operating theatres

OR1 theatres from KARL STORZ integrate the many complex requirements of an operating theatre, bringing together endoscopy, the latest image-enhancement HD camera technology, visualisation, documentation and communication. They give surgeons complete control over every aspect of their surgery, with all necessary information at their fingertips.

The ability to pre-set a theatre to an individual surgeon’s needs creates a bespoke experience that reduces both operating times and the length of time a patient is under anaesthetic. This, combined with the lower impact nature of keyhole surgery, reduces the amount of time patients need to spend in hospital and helps to speed up recovery.

IMAGE1 SPIES

OR1 theatres also feature the IMAGE1 SPIES system, named an Innovation of the Year for 2014 by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), the largest society of minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgeons in North America.

IMAGE1 SPIES is KARL STORZ’s latest solution to optimise the surgeon’s view of challenging anatomical areas during complex surgeries.  In these days of “me too” products, this prestigious award clearly demonstrates that KARL STORZ is still very much an innovator, leading the field in imaging technology.

Combined with new FULL HD threechip camera heads, IMAGE1 SPIES includes the CLARA, CHROMA and SPECTRA modes, which activate proprietary image enhancement algorithms to provide optimum image quality.

VISITOR1

VISITOR1 is an internet-based telementoring and tele-presence device that makes it easy for surgeons to connect remotely to the point of care. By creating a two-way, interactive, audiovisual experience, it enables full involvement with clinical processes and access to patient data and medical imaging.

Whether used for consultation before surgery, remote participation and guidance during surgery, or for education and training post-surgery, VISITOR1 allows a clinical team made up of experts thousands of miles apart to work together to ensure the best possible outcome.

Colchester General Hospital

The demands of scheduled surgery and emergency procedures mean that operating theatres are in almost constant use, so maintenance or building work must be done quickly, smoothly and effectively, causing the least possible disruption to theatre lists. When KARL STORZ was successful in its bid to refit two theatres at Colchester General Hospital, the team had only nine days to work on each theatre.  In just over a fortnight, the hospital had two brand new OR1 theatres packed full of innovation, including IMAGE1 SPIES systems.

“These theatres have transformed image enhancement, quality of teaching and ease of use by theatre staff. Image capture is of high quality, allowing valuable feedback to trainees and enhanced review of procedures. The quality of the image is outstanding and the ongoing training of theatre staff by KARL STORZ has been exemplary. The surgical team is very happy with its decision to install this equipment,” commented Tan Arulampalam, consultant surgeon, Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust.

Burnley General Hospital

The Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre at Burnley General Hospital (run by the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust) recently opened two new OR1 theatres, which will further cement the hospital’s reputation as one of the North West’s leading centres for laparoscopic gynaecological surgery.

The OR1 theatres, featuring IMAGE1 SPIES, also offer connectivity with hospital ICT systems, giving improved audio-visual communication with Unicast streaming for teleconferencing, teaching or telesurgery.  This opens up many opportunities for training and education, a vital part of the hospital’s work and a key element of the KARL STORZ ethos.

“The new theatres are fantastic. The quality of the images is something that one only appreciates after working on a few cases. It makes it easier to tackle more challenging cases such as the large uterus or severe endometriosis, and has certainly helped us all,” commented Mr Mark Willet, divisional director for family care.

Morriston Hospital, Swansea

Morriston Hospital in Swansea is one of the four main hospitals that make up the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) Health Board. The hospital has had to meet increasing demand in terms of patient numbers, and is currently undergoing massive redevelopment in order to modernise and increase efficiency.

KARL STORZ worked in partnership with the hospital in order to provide a series of technological solutions, tailored to the hospital’s needs, with the aim of increasing efficiency and hospital capability, and advancing technology. The OR1 theatres, supported by VISITOR1, place Morriston firmly at the forefront of innovation
