Study day highlights key issues in endoscope decontamination

On 22 November, eighty decontamination technicians and reprocessing staff joined together for a British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) study day, at the Madejski Stadium in Reading.

Cantel (UK)  sponsored the day, which was free for delegates to attend and was hosted by three key expert speakers: Dr Helen Griffiths, decontamination lead for BSG; Tina Bradley, infection research laboratory manager – Birmingham; and Wayne Spencer AE(D) from Spencer Nickson. The agenda focused on ‘The Why, What & How of Endoscope Decontamination’ and included individual presentations from the host speakers, as well as a group work session.

The aim of the study day was to highlight best practice for endoscope decontamination. Key areas of endoscope decontamination were covered, with presentations focusing on infection risks, manual cleaning and the use of endoscope washer disinfectors (EWDs). All delegates were also given the opportunity to experience a scenario session, which allowed each of them to address issues that they encounter daily – followed up with professional advice from the speakers.

Kaye Wallace-Adams, Cantel’s marketing manager commented “It’s great that we can help support the delivery of free training to key Decontamination staff who have a huge responsibility to ensure that the highest standard of decontamination and patient safety is maintained.”

BSG Study Days have proved to be a beneficial source of training and education across the UK and are held in a variety of locations, making them accessible to hospital staff based in more rural locations.
